Featured Work

Systems Engineering Scientist

My first career job started in the Systems Engineering Department of Ciba-Corning Diagnostics. Ciba-Corning later became Chiron Diagnostics and then Bayer Diagnostics (and now it is Siemens). I started my career troubleshooting and repairing the ACS:180 and working on assay performance issues. I moved up in the organization and began working on enhancements, evaluation testing and prototype instruments. We developed the ACS:180 plus and the extended operation module.

I began working on the next generation breadboard instrument in the research phase and helped evaluate and develop the first prototype subsystems. I was involved in the design and development of the Advia:Centaur from the beginning through the entire product development life cycle through the world wide release of the blood analyzer. I led evaluation and testing of subsystems, I was responsible for developing automated procedures, and I performed the FDA Risk Analysis (FTA/FMECA) on the system. My job required that I worked effectively with everyone. I led cross-functional teams and worked with Mechanical, Electrical, and Software Engineering; with Manufacturing, Reliability, Quality Assurance, Technical Writing, Field and Customer Service, and with Assay Development and Production. I knew every part on that instrument and how to recognize when it failed and how to fix it.

My pre-med education was vital to my role in being able to make sure that the blood samples, worked with the instrument and reagents. The slightest failure could lead to reporting an incorrect result which was unacceptable. My ability to understand and communicate across functions made me a valuable resource and allowed me to lead senior engineers and scientists on many projects.

I had to use my analytic, scientific, technical, leadership, and communication skills on a daily basis as we went through the product life cycle. I earned the trust of software engineers and this is where I got my first taste of programming, writing sequences for the automated cleaning procedures.

During my time at Ciba Corning / Chiron / Bayer Diagnostics our company was purchased twice and we went through several reorganizations. This was my first experience with Organizational Development and part of the reason I left to go to graduate school full-time to pursue my MBA. Unfortunately, good scientists and engineers were placed in management positions without any formal training or skills and it usually did not end well. As I reached that management level, I decided that I would be pro-active and learn how to be a great leader before I was promoted to that level.

I learned to look at, evaluate, and balance the details and the big picture; to manage short-term crises and long-term goals; and to see all parts of the total system during my tenure as a Systems Engineering Scientist. The skills and competencies I developed in my first career have been utilized effectively in my small business and non-profit consulting career.
