Project Management and Support

I have been leading projects since my time at Bayer. I have managed many high priority projects at the same time, being both a contributor and leader. As my career has evolved I've strengthened my project management skills and am currently studying the PMBOK for my Project Management PMP Certification.

Project management for me is about leadership and communication. The PMBOK is just one of many tools needed to lead successful projects. Many people can lead projects, but great leaders not only finish projects on time and on budget, they build a culture of success. Great leaders don't just give orders, they are hands on working side by side, offering support, providing vision, and removing obstacles.

The keys to my project management success have been my leadership style, my total systems approach and my communication skills. One of the most important things is creating and communicating a common vision where you can motivate people to embrace your mission, join your team, and work hard. Seeing and communicating the big picture and potential obstacles and contingency plans is also essential to staying on track. Knowing your teammates well and what motivates and de-motivates them helps you adjust your leadership approach to the team and key individuals. Another factor that has helped me is my ability to work side-by-side with teammates and contribute. You earn respect when you are in the trenches with your team, not just giving instructions and monitoring progress. Good Project Management is a skill.

Another important thing that many experts on project management forget to say is that it is just as important to understand when to kill bad projects. Killing bad projects early helps save lots of time, money, and wasted resources. Sometimes ending bad projects is a challenge and it takes a lot of courage. Great leaders don't take it personal and know when to speak up and get away from projects that don't support a company's vision or long-term success.
